What If It Rains on Your Wedding Day?
Quick answer
What if it rains on your wedding day?
You get married in the rain. Honestly, that's it. And some of the photos you'll love most might come from it. The weather is the most common worry for anyone planning an outdoor wedding. But no wedding sticks to the script, however carefully you plan, and the bits nobody planned are usually what you remember. Ian and Arielle got rain. It didn't faze them for a second, and their guests didn't mind either. Shooting in the rain is tougher for us, no question. Look at the results, though. The two of them standing in the rain together, leaning on each other, is such a touching moment. Everyone is there to celebrate you, wet or dry. So be happy.
The irony of weddings is that by their very nature they can be quite stressful for many couples. Friends and family have come together to witness the beginning of something beautiful. Months of meticulous planning is finally about to bear fruit and there are so many ‘what if’ moments to contend with. The thing to remember though is that no matter how thorough you are, weddings have a way of deviating from best laid plans. C’est La Vie. What will be will be. Unscripted situations are often the best part of your wedding and very likely the moments you’ll remember the most.
The most common concern if you’re planning an outdoor wedding is the weather. What if it rains on your wedding day? For Ian and Arielle all it meant was that they got married in the rain. One of my absolute favourite couples who were faced with wedding’s nemesis; rain on their wedding day. It did not phase them at all, and neither did it phase their guests. Looking back at their wedding photo’s I love the element that the rain brought to their wedding. Don’t get me wrong, it was challenging shooting in the rain, but the results are plain to see. They never for one second lost sight of what was important to them; each other. Standing in the rain together, drawing comfort from each other was a very touching moment and one I’m sure they’ll savour forever.
Remember, your family and friends are united in one common goal, and that’s to celebrate with you on one of the happiest days you’ll ever experience. If there’s on day you’re allowed to be unashamedly happy, it’s on your wedding day. Embrace that it’s your wedding that everyone is celebrating. The best way to please people on your wedding day…just be happy.

Frequently asked questions
What should we do if it rains on our wedding day?
Have a covered spot ready for the ceremony and a stack of umbrellas by the door. After that, let it go. Ian and Arielle just carried on, and the umbrellas turned up in some of the best frames in the post.
Can you still take wedding photos in the rain?
You can. It's harder work for the photographer, but rain brings a mood you just don't get on a clear day. Scroll down and see for yourself.
Is rain on your wedding day good luck?
Lots of people think so. What we can tell you is that the couples we've photographed in the rain, Ian and Arielle here and Chanty and Conrad in Eerste Rivier, came away with pictures full of character.
