As we prepare for a our very own family portraits this week, I thought I would touch on the subject of how important getting in front of the camera as a photographer is. Often times it is easy to forget what our clients are feeling and how much preparation it takes for a session. It is also a big investment for most people and so expectations are high.

We have been wanting to do a shoot with all three of us in it for a while now, but just did not seem to find the time. We have picked out our clothing (I bought my dress months ago!) and have a great location in mind. As a mom I feel a bit nervous of how the shoot will go with my 17 month old little girl who seems to be exercising her ever increasing determination on a daily basis!

As professional photographers we have to remember that the family shoots and group shots at weddings are a big deal to our clients and are really so important. Think about generational photographs that have so much meaning when a family experiences a loss. Imagine that the image you take could be the last one that they have together with their grandmother. It is a real gift that we can give to people.

There is never the perfect time, the perfect weight, the perfect anything for doing a shoot. Mom’s and Dad’s do not avoid being in the pictures. These pictures are not only for you but for you children to remember you by in years to come. Trust me, as somebody who lost their Dad too early (he was only 54) any pictures I can find of him and I are real treasures.

So, don’t put it off! It’s time to get in front of the lens for a change.
